General Notes for All Sheets:
1. Signs and Traffic Control Devices (TCDs) shown are the minimum required.
2. Arrows shown in roadway are directional arrows to indicate traffic movements.
3. Do not locate sign supports in locations designed for bicycle or pedestrian traffic.
4. Combine drawing details to complete a temporary traffic control plan for each work activity.
5. Low speed facilities are defined as having a permanent speed of 70 kph and lower.
6. High speed facilities are defined as having a permanent speed over 70 kph.
7. Place signs so they are readable for oncoming traffic.
Design Speed for Temporary Traffic Control
The permanent (pre-construction) posted speed shall be used as the basis for design for all speed related temporary traffic control elements including:
- Taper lengths for lane closures, lane shifts, and shoulder closures. See Table 1 on Sheet TTC02.
- Temporary sign sizing and spacing. See Table 1 on Sheet TTC02 and Table 5 on Sheet TTC08.
- Temporary channelization device spacing. See Table 1 on Sheet TTC02.
- Impact attenuator selection.
- Temporary alignment designs.
Temporary Speed Reductions
Temporary posted speed reduction are optional for all roadways over 80 kph. See sheet TTC24 for speed reduction layouts.
- Roadways with a permanent speed of 50 kph and lower may not be reduced.
- Roadways with a permanent speed lower than 80 kph may be reduced to a
minimum temporary speed of 50 kph.
- Roadways with permanent speed between 80 and 120 kph may be reduced by a maximum of 30 kph with a minimum temporary speed of 80 kph.
- Roadways with permanent speed over 120 kph may be reduced by a maximum of 20 kph with a minimum temporary speed of 100 kph.
Note: A temporary posted speed reduction does not result in a reduced design speed.
Elements of the Work Zone
The Advance Warning Area alerts road users to the approaching work zone. See Sheet TTC02 for details.
The Transition Area maneuvers road users out of the normal path of travel to accommodate the work zone. See sheet TTC02 for details.
The Buffer Area provides a longitudinal buffer between the Transition Area and Work Zone. See sheet TTC02 for details.
The Work Zone is where the construction activities are taking place.
The Termination Area guides road users back to the normal path of travel.
Transition and Taper Types
Merging Tapers (L) merge two lanes of traffic in the same direction into one lane.
Shifting Tapers (L/2) guide road users from one path to another.
Shoulder Tapers (L/3) close a shoulder to traffic.
Downstream Tapers guide road users back to the normal path of travel after passing the work zone. Typical Downstream Taper length is 15m to 30m.
Elements of the Work Zone

Transition and Taper Types

Driveway and Business Access
Delineate driveways and business access points to remain open during construction with blue TCDs.

Notes:
1. Values shown are in meters.
2. Tapers for facilities lower than 70 kph use \( L = W * S^{2} / 155.4 \).
3. Tapers for facilities 70 kph and higher use \( L = W * S / 1.61 \).
4. Distance between tapers "D" is 4*S (preferred), 3*S (min), and 5*S (max.). See Sheet TTC20 for graphical representation of "D".
5. Values for "L", and distance between tapers may be interpolated between chart values.
6. "A" is the distance from the taper/transition prior to the work zone to the first sign.
7. "B" is the distance between intermediate signs.
8. "A" and "B" values for sign spacing may be adjusted by +/- 30% to accommodate existing features.
9. "C" is the distance from the last intermediate sign to the Road Work Ahead sign.
10. See Sheet TTC13 through Sheet TTC24 for common applications.

3. Pedestrian facilities may be reduced to 1.3m if the cross section is limited. See Sheet TTC11 and TTC12 for additional pedestrian facility details.
4. See Table 4-5 in SHC 305 for channelization device types.

Multi-Lane and Divided Roadways
Notes:
1. Rigid safety barrier shall be certified according to the crash test standards SASO EN12767,
Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware (US MASH, 2016) or NCHRP 350 (NCHRP 1992)
2. Provide additional setback distance as required to achieve deflection distance from crash test results.
3. Install barrier per manufacturer's recommendations.
4. Install temporary barrier on smooth, solid surfacings. Maintain smooth solid surfacing for clear area behind the barrier. See Sheet TTC04 for additional barrier details.
5. Where pavement is not present, construct a minimum 500mm thick temporary asphalt pad for the barrier to sit on.
6. Ensure setback distance is clear of any grass, construction debris, stockpiled materials, equipment, or any other objects that will be in conflict with barrier deflection.

Typical Installations
Temporary Impact Attenuator
General Notes for All Details:
1. Use the appropriate layout configuration based on the pre-construction posted speed.
2. Typical outside diameter of each module is 915mm.
3. Typical attenuator layouts shown. Layouts may vary by both speed and manufacturer.
4. Divided One-Way Attenuator layouts may be oriented toward oncoming traffic at angles up to 15 degrees.
5. Final alignment of attenuator will be established in the field, as directed by Engineer. At locations where vibrations and surface slopes may cause modules to shift, modules shall be anchored to prevent movement according to manufacturer's instruction and as approved by the Engineer.
6. See Table 1 on Sheet TTCO2 for barrier flare rates.
7. Use the One-Way Roadway Typical installation for each barrier terminal when the available width in the median does not allow for the installation of the Divided Highway Typical installation.
8. Use Narrow Site impact attenuators when the available width is insufficient to allow for barrel installations as shown.
* Minimum 0.6m, otherwise maximize the distance from the traveled way to the temporary impact attenuator.

1. Use the appropriate layout configuration based on the pre-construction posted speed.
2. For posted speeds not shown, use the next higher speed for attenuator selection.
3. Typical outside diameter of each module is 915mm.
4. Typical attenuator layouts shown. Layouts may vary by both speed and manufacturer. Number shown within each module is mass of dry sand in kilograms.
5. Final alignment of attenuator will be established in the field, as directed by Engineer. At locations where vibrations and surface slopes may cause modules to shift, modules shall be anchored to prevent movement according to manufacturers' instruction and as approved by the Engineer.
6. The leading module of each attenuator shall be delineated with the appropriate object marker, as shown above.
7. The object marker shall be 2mm thick aluminum sheeting approximately 600mm wide, 915mm deep and covered with yellow encapsulating yellow sheeting. Black stripes 125mm wide shall be silk –screened on the sheeting at a 45 degree slope with 100mm space between stripes.

General Notes:
1. When closing or relocating crosswalks or other pedestrian facilities provide compliant facilities. Include accessibility features consistent with existing pedestrian facilities by providing adequate slope transitions and surfacing.
2. Provide non-slip, 1.5m wide surface through entire pedestrian route. If not possible, provide 1.3m min. width with 1.5m x 1.5m passing spaces every 60m along the route.
3. Only devices for pedestrians are shown. Other devices may be necessary to control vehicular traffic.
4. Stage work, as necessary, to provide a temporary pedestrian access route at all times. For roadways with no available detours, maintain one open sidewalk at all times.
5. Minimize pedestrian out-of-direction travel.
6. Mount signs on type 1 barricade. See Section 7.3.5 of SHC 602 for barricade details.
